Carbon Neutral Hosting
According to the latest research from analyst Gartner, the world's datacentres are responsible for the same volume of carbon emissions as the average European country and more than double those of Finland and Portugal.
Serverstream takes environmental concerns seriously and ensures that as many measures are taken to reduce the carbon footprint as possible, including the following key points.
Energy Smart Servers
Our latest Dell PowerEdge Servers consume up to 25% less energy than previous generations. When combined with impressive performance gains, this results in up to a 3X increase in performance per watt over previous generations. Our Dell Servers feature new energy efficient technologies such as:
- High efficiency power supplies; reducing wasted power at lower workloads
- Variable speed temperature controlled fan technology; allowing fans to spin at reduced speed when environment allows
- Small form factor hard drives; saving up to 7 watts per drive over larger 3.5" units
- Low Voltage processors with power management tools; allowing operating systems to dial down power draw during non-peak times
Hot and Colds Aisles
Datacentres operate in a number of ways in regards to the cooling as technology and efficiency demands have matured. Most modern datacentres operate hot and cold aisles, where cold air is pumped into the front of servers and hot air extracted from the back, the aisles are physically separated so the air cannot mix reducing the cooling requirements and thus power consumption. All Serverstream's new datacentres use hot and cold aisles.Bulk Buying & Recycling
Serverstream always buys in bulk ensuring a reduced number of deliveries and there for reducing carbon emissions from transportation.
All packaging is recycled through local schemes where possible.
Carbon Neutrality Options
Serverstream are pleased to offer our customers the ability to offset the carbon emissions from their servers through a number of methods.
We calculate the carbon footprint of our servers as follows:
- Netengine - 1 tonne of CO2 per year
- Netengine Pro - 2 tonnes of CO2 per year
- Netengine Enterprise will vary and will be calculated on request
The calculations are based upon the energy consumption of the servers and the PUE (power usage efficiency) of the datacentre itself; using the average from carbonfootprint.com of 430g (grams) of CO2 per KWh (Kilo Watt hour).
Serverstream offer two methods of carbon offset and customers may choose either:
Carbon credits invested in projects in the developing world via the CarbonNeutral company. Verified and certified to the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) and are generated by resource conservation schemes - energy efficiency, methane recovery and/or low carbon fuel switches.
The Woodland Trust, a UK based charity planting and managing woodlands in the UK, increasing the carbon sequestration. Deforestation accounts for 17.4% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. Woodland creation in the UK is relatively expensive because of high UK land prices. However the benefits of new native woodland are directly visible to UK residents.
Customers may choose either option on ordering if desired:
- Carbon Neutral VCS certified projects - £8.50 per tonne
- Woodland Trust UK tree planting - £28.75 per tonne
