DDoS Mitigation
Dealing with DoS (Denial of Service) and more specifically DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) is the hardest thing for any organisation to do. Modern firewalling technology can mitigate and deny most forms of DoS attacks as blocking connections from defined source is very easily done and indeed industry leading products like Checkpoint FW-1 and Cisco ASAs have features built in to provide protection from these types of attack automatically.
DDoS attacks are another matter however, they can take many forms and as they are generally run from a network of compromised machines on the Internet (so called Botnets) the source can be many thousands of IP addresses. This can generate hundreds of thousands of packets thrown at a network from real websites and thus is impossible to block at a firewall level without cutting the service off from the Internet.
